Mindfulness for Lawyers:
A Three-Part Series
(Florida CLE Program: 2014-2015)

This 3-part CLE Program offers lawyers and judges a comprehensive introduction to mindfulness, including the insights that inform a deeper understanding of the subject along with experiential practices that bring them to life. Participants will learn what mindfulness is and the ways it is being introduced to the legal profession.

Neuroscience research supporting mindfulness will be covered so as to facilitate a more thoughtful and engaged application of mindfulness practices for relieving stress, enhancing focus and concentration, and cultivating greater resilience. While each part of the series stands on its own, they work together to help participants bring the practice of mindfulness more fully into their daily lives, both professionally and personally.

Introductory Session: Mindfulness and Law

The Introductory Session offers lawyers and judges an introduction to mindfulness, exploring the science of mindfulness and connections between mindfulness and the practice of law. Participants will learn mindfulness exercises helpful for stress-reduction and focus and concentration, and tips for integrating mindfulness into the busy work day. Please note that the Introductory Session serves as a foundation for Parts 1 and 2 of the CLE series.

Session One builds off of the series’ introduction and moves into a deeper discussion of mindfulness as a practice that can help develop focus and concentration, and serve as an effective tool for stress reduction. A variety of focused attention practices will be taught, offering participants a more in depth understanding of mindfulness and allowing them to find an approach that resonates with them. Participants will come to appreciate more directly the ways that the development of attention is associated with a variety of other professionally relevant skills, such as the ability to regulate emotions during challenging periods of high stress, listening more effectively, and being less distracted.

Session Two: Mindfulness, Resilience and the Practice of Law

Session Two builds on mindfulness as a tool for focus and concentration by exploring the practice as a means to develop greater mental flexibility and resilience. The group will learn about and practice mindfulness exercises that are helpful for multi-tasking, decision making, building situational awareness and resilience and will learn ways to integrate this practice into their busy workday.
