We have an exciting Homecoming & Alumni Weekend planned for each of you and we hope to see you there. The week will kick off with the 8th Annual Homecoming Golf Tournament, honoring Miami Law alumnus and legal legend H.T. Smith, Jr., JD ’73 as the Tournament Legal Honoree and UM Hall of Famer and ESPN analyst, Jonathan Vilma, BBA ’04, as Tournament Sports Honoree; a reception for Moot Court alumni; a reception for Black Law Student Association alumni; a class reunion reception for the classes of 1992 & 1997; and the 69th Annual Morning Sprits and Homecoming Breakfast, a celebration of all alumni.

Diane P. Perez, JD ’07 Installed as President of the Coral Gables Bar Association
Diane P. Perez was sworn in as the new 2017-2018 President of the Coral Gables Bar Association during its annual Installation Gala at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables on Saturday, Sept. 23. Miami Law alumnus and Florida Bar President Michael J. Higer, delivered the keynote address.

Michael S Pieciak JD '09, has been named the president-elect of the North American Securities Administrators Association
Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Financial Regulation, was named president-elect of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) last week at the NASAA annual conference in Seattle. Pieciak will serve as president-elect for one year and begin his term as president in September 2018.

The Honorable Laura A. Stuzin, JD ’94, Elevated to Circuit Bench
Miami-Dade County Court Judge Laura Anne Stuzin was elevated to the circuit bench Monday. Stuzin, 47, became a judge in 2015 after working as of counsel at Rumberger, Kirk & Caldwell.

Jay Jones, JD ’04, has been appointed to the SC Bar Torts & Insurance Practice Section Council
Barnwell Whaley Special Counsel Jay Jones has been appointed as a general council member of the South Carolina Bar Torts & Insurance Practice Section Council (TIPS) for a three –year term. His Council service began July 1, 2017.

Lauren Deutch, JD ’05, Receives 40 Under 40 Award
Lauren Deutch, senior counsel in Broad and Cassel, has received the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s 40 Under 40 Outstanding Lawyers of South Florida award. Award recipients were nominated by their peers to receive this award and selected by a committee comprised of well-known local attorneys and community leaders.

Allen Popper, JD ’85, is a public defender who has served The Legal Aid Society in New York City for thirty years. After a career of advocacy, Popper is still passionate about his job.

Environmental preservation has always been important to Miami Law alumna Kelly Cox, who received a joint degree in Law and Marine Ecosystems and Society in 2016 now spends her days zealously advocating for the waterways and aquatic species in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.

’CANE FUNDER & AUCTION
Miami Law’s HOPE Public Interest Resource Center (“HOPE”) is raising funds to support law students working to ensure access to justice for all through the HOPE Summer Public Interest Fellowship program. Founded in 1998, HOPE is committed to engaging law students in community and pro bono advocacy. This year, HOPE will expand the program to include placing Fellows in hurricane-ravaged communities. How can you help? Make a donation to HOPE’s ‘Cane Funder through November 5 and help HOPE meet their goal of raising $10,000 and be sure to bid on exciting and unique items in HOPE’s annual auction from Nov. 6-8! 100% of proceeds raised from the auction and the ‘Cane Funder will directly support students through public interest summer fellowships.
